We (Andy, Bryan, Rob and Neil) camped at Winshields Farm,
which is handy for the Twice Brewed Inn. It had apparently stopped
raining the day before our arrival, having previously rained solidly
since Hadrian himself left for Rome. The site was a little soggy, but we
only had a couple of brief showers over the weekend, so we were lucky.
After pitching the tents we walked along the Wall to the Milecastle
Inn, and after suitably fortifying ourselves strolled back to the
campsite, followed by dinner at the Twice Brewed. Abby rolled in
something so unspeakably horrible that even the farmer back at the
campsite couldn't stand the smell, and directed Andy to the hosepipe.
Distance approximately 5 miles.
We had breakfast at the pub, and then Rob drove us to the Mithraeum
at Brocolitia. The first couple of miles were fairly flat easy walking,
apart from the fact that Abby decided that she didn't like cows (a
sheepdog from working stock too!) and found something horrible to roll
in. The path then rose onto the ridge at Sewingshields where there is
the first sight of the Wall itself. The large fort at Housesteads was
fairly busy, but for most of the time we had the path to ourselves. We
climbed over Steel Rigg and then dropped down to the pub at Twice Brewed
for lunch and to meet Dick and Roger who had booked a room at the pub.
After lunch we climbed back onto the Wall and followed our route of
the previous day to the Milecastle Inn and then back to the campsite.
